CHICAGO – BOARD PRESIDENT REFUSES TO DETAIN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Chicago-Board President Toni Preckwinkle outright refused to comply with federal immigration laws saying that she would not keep Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers despite repeated requests from Washington to do so. Every month, about 100 illegal immigrants are arrested for crimes and put in Cook County Jail, where they often bond out and disappear.

Preckwinkle justifies her blatant disregard for the law saying that Cook County will not help in the deportation process, because that would mean granting [illegal immigrants] fewer rights than American citizens. Preckwinkle said, “The last frontier is how we treat the undocumented in this country,” claiming this is a civil rights issue rather than one of public safety.

FEDS TRY TO MAKE BORDER LESS ENTICING TO CROSS

Since last year, the federal government has been using Mexican and Central American television and radio stations and newspapers to warn locals of the dangers of illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, including assault, murder and the fact that women are often raped.

Now, the federal government is expanding the program to U.S. cities with large immigrant communities, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Seattle and Atlanta hoping that current illegal immigrants will discourage family members back home from making the treacherous and illegal crossing into this country.
