Fox News Poll: Voters say US less respected since Obama took office

Nearly half of American voters -- 48 percent -- think the United States is less respected around the world today than it was five years ago. That’s up from 37 percent who felt that way last year, according to a Fox News poll.
The new poll, released Monday, finds 14 percent of voters think the U.S. is more respected today -- nearly five years into the Obama presidency -- and 36 percent say it’s unchanged.
In 2012, roughly 29 percent of voters said the U.S. was more respected than in 2008. That’s more than twice the number who feel that way today (14 percent).
Among Democrats, 25 percent say the U.S. is more respected around the world today. That’s a 27 percentage-point drop from 52 percent last year. Twenty-seven percent of Democrats say the U.S. is less respected, up from 11 percent.
A slim 51-percent majority of Independents thinks the U.S. is less respected, up from 38 percent last year. At the same time, the number of independents who think the country is more respected fell to just 9 percent, down from 27 percent.
Among Republicans, 72 percent think the country is less respected around the world today than it was five years ago, 6 percent say more respected and 22 percent say it’s unchanged. The views are generally unchanged from last year.
The Fox News poll is based on land-line and cell phone interviews with 900 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide and was conducted under the joint direction of Anderson Robbins Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R) from Sept. 6 to 8. The poll's margin of sampling error is 3 percentage points, plus or minus.
