Letters From Israel

[Rachel called. She has been making the rounds of the children and grandchildren, and enjoying herself enormously. "Come and get me!"
I had been hoping for a few more days. "The rockets are falling like crazy (just at that moment, a siren and several large explosions). Did you hear it?"
"I don't care. Enough is enough. I want to go home. Come and get me!"
On the way home she said "We have to go to the building site first. There are a few things to be taken care of."
Did it bother me that the building site was a full ninety minutes out of the way? Or that I tried to listen to Brahms' First while Rachel chattered on? Or that Brahms and Rachel were overridden every few minutes by "Red Alert! X or Y or Z under attack."?
But Merciful G-d took pity on Chicken-Heart and we found the site in turmoil. Most of the workers are Druse, and just that morning their villages in Upper Galilee and the Golan Heights had been rocketed from Lebanonand their families were in a panic and demanded they return home. So they were running home. So we continued home.
Minutes after arriving home Rachel went in for a shower. A siren, and three very large explosions.
"Welcome home" I said.
"What's for lunch?" she said.]

BACK  TO  A.  B.  NORMAL  by  Moshe Chicken-Heart

"Cluck, cluck, cluck, Chicken-Heart" wrote a good friend. "You had the nerve to tell us what you would do to the bad guys. But you didn't have the nerve to tell us who the bad guys are. Cluck, cluck."
Sorry I have to repeat myself:  Israel is a democracy. If you have opinions more or less synchronized with those who control the media, the justice system, the movers and shapers of academia, your freedom of speech is indeed protected. If, however, your opinions are different… for the sake of argument, say you are believed-to-be religious, racist, fascist, right-wing, settler, fanatic, etc, you have a problem. You are clearly anti-democratic. And if you are anti-democratic, why should you be allowed to use the freedoms protected by our democratic system, to undermine that system?
So, Clucky, were I to reveal the identities of those I wanted to drown in the feces-filled toilet bowl, I would certainly be arrested and prosecuted for insulting a public official, at best, and incitement to murder, at worst.
Even an attempt to disguise my target – say, I wrote Lickey Louse instead of Mickey Mouse – would offer little or no protection.

Still, to satisfy your childish needs and the needs of others like you, I will give you three TOTALLY FICTITIOUS characters who CANNOT BE MISTAKEN FOR ANYONE LIVING OR DEAD.

First, Boozy Woozy. Boozy is a midget, and the leader of the opposition in Tiny Town, as seen in the epic film TERROR OF TINY TOWN. Boozy may also be a liar, or a moron, or a moronic liar. But he certainly is a midget.

Second, Chubby Robbins. Chubby is obsessed with ice cream, and convinced that if he can shovel enough ice cream into those determined to kill us, all will be well.

Third, Simian Putz. Simian is living proof – unless he's a zombie – of the power of evil to keep one alive. So old that we've run out of numbers, he believes that the world must conform to his view of it. And if it fails to conform, better it should cease to exist.

Okay?

[A new cease fire. Our so-called leaders have totally surrendered and are, naturally, declaring victory. And our media collaborators are flooding the airways  with IAI – Idiotic Apologists for Islam, explaining that our enemies don't really and truly want to kill us. May He have mercy on us.]

Away With Words

[Rachel is furious with me for forcing her to go to Jerusalem, and refusing to join her there. She says she needs me and I have abandoned her. There she is, surrounded by friends and family who adore her, in a peaceful atmosphere that allows her to get the rest she desperately needs. But she may be right. Alone, I can eat what I want, when I want. I can watch/listen to what I want, when I want. I don't have to look at home furnishing magazines and comment on French Provincial furniture. I don't have to listen to tales of how the builders attached a toilet bowl to the ceiling in house X. And not just to the ceiling, but upside down.
So why am I miserable? Without her, there is an emptiness, a sense of desolation, a longing that has me on the edge of despair. Better that she should annoy me, nag me, criticize me, than not be here at all. And much as I hate to admit it, my wearing shmattes just to infuriate her gives me no pleasure if she isn't here.]

A  WAY  WITH  WORDS  or  AWAY  WITH  WORDS  by Moshe Chicken-Heart

Yes, I have a way with words. I use this way to hide what I really feel. I don't know if I'm afraid you will see me as I really am, or more likely, that I will see me as I really am.
You are well aware that on my most civil days I am both anti-social and angry about just everybody.  Beyond the anger there is a hatred that scorches everything. It is not a hatred of those trying to destroy us. We live in an area surrounded by Predatory Barbarians or Barbarian Predators [take your choice], and must take every measure to protect ourselves. They can't help being what they are, and we can only help them by speeding their journey to the Paradise they long for.
My hatred is reserved for those who are technically my co-religionists.

My people are genetically deformed. No nation/people since the beginning of mankind is so intelligent and creative. No nation/people since the beginning of mankind is so lacking in common sense and the willingness to protect itself.
We are the Chosen People. But we did not choose to be Chosen. Nor were we left a choice; 'accept or die' limits your options dramatically. From the first we have fought against the obligations the Creator demands of us. 'From the first' means from the time of Abraham. Our two thousand year exile did not cause our genetic deformation; the exile merely exacerbated it.

From politicians to Empty Talking Heads, academics to journalists, the willfully blind and the crassly stupid, we are inundated with co-religionists who work for our destruction while pretending to work for our salvation. These are the people for whom my hatred is unabated.
You cannot imagine how I envy those who believe man created G-d in order to sanctify and justify whatever man wants to do. Such a belief makes comfortable gibberish of all belief.
Those who have been reading my rants for years, and know my history, understand why I know – as opposed to merely believing – that there is a Creator. Past, present, future are all one to the Creator, and whatever the Creator does is – however difficult for me to understand – all for the best.
I am very tired. Seventy-four is my chronological age, but given all I have been through my age, as a doctor smirkingly declared, is well past ninety. There are two reasons I fight to stay alive.
The first is my passion for Rachel, who needs me to provide a host of services for her. But even with my love for her undiminished, I am breaking down at an ever-increasing rate. I have already had 40+ surgical procedures, and would need forty more from head to toe just to keep functioning. It ain't gonna happen.
The second reason I fight to stay alive is my hatred for those who work for our destruction. I don't simply want to see them dead. I want to torture them to death, to hold each and every one's head down in a feces-filled toilet bowl until they drown. Would I actually do it, if the opportunity presented itself? Probably not. I am, after all, Moshe Chicken-Heart.
But if only I were Moshe Lion-Heart….  I'd bathe in those bastards' blood.

[A curiosity:  Many people tape concerts off the radio. From the start of the current 'festivities' just about every piece is interrupted by a voice-over, "Warning! Rocket attack Ashkelon" (or wherever). Longer works can be interrupted three or four times. I wonder if those who taped these concerts will erase them, or preserve them as memorabilia of a truly unique time.]

Letters From Israel

BACK  TO  THE  FUTURE  by  Even-More-Confused-than-Usual Moshe

Oh, Joy!!! No sooner had I completed my unseemly whining over the apparent success of the cease-fire, when our Piece Loving neighbors – renowned for their decency and kindness – took mercy on me and resumed the shelling.
Three missiles fired at Beersheba early in the afternoon marked renewal of the festivities.
It was shortly after 9. We were watching a special, Who Can Be More Irritating: Judge Judy or Dr. Phil ?  The special was hosted by Ellen Degenerate. Rachel said she heard explosions. I apologized, saying I had been eating potato chips. No, said Rachel, these are non-odiferous explosions. Within seconds the siren sounded signaling the return of comforting normalcy. Sirens/explosions non-stop thru now, 1:15am. Rachel has collapsed from exhaustion, and even the constant thudding rattling the house cannot rouse her.

One scene in the film THE HEART OF DARKNESS opens on a battlefield with an officer saying "I love the smell of napalm in the morning". It was pretty close to that here this morning, with a thick haze covering everything and the smell of gunpowder very strong. We are supposed to get visitors later in the day, but they may not come because of the situation. If they do come, I'll try and get Rachel to return with them toJerusalem for several days. She really needs to get out of here for a while.

These are truly special people, genuinely gutsy, who spent the last weeks in our home in Gush Katif. A rabbi and his wife have been our spiritual guides for years, and trusted friends. They have three sons in the army. A Dutch Christian couple… I can only describe them as soulmates. They have an exceptional son in the IDF.
They called to say they were bringing food with them, and indeed they brought enough for a platoon for a week. But Rachel lives on the 'what if?' principle and ordered me to Ashkelon to buy food, just in case…
I was in a pharmacy in a mall when the sirens sounded. To my amazement/amusement, except for eyes rolling and a few groans nobody headed for the shelter in the back of the pharmacy. When I tried to exit with my purchase I found the front door locked. The girl who unlocked the door explained that in the past when the staff and customers ran to the shelter, people would enter the store and steal whatever they could.
If it was strange inside the pharmacy, outside was surreal. More sirens, sounds of explosions, and people walking around as if nothing was happening. Even young mothers and fathers pushing carriages and strollers, smiling and seemingly unconcerned. Here and there someone stood silent, generally an older person, nervously scanning the skies.

The guests arrived, sirens sounded at fifteen minute intervals, everyone had a splendid time. And Rachel agreed, with little argument, to return with them to Jerusalem and stay through the weekend.
So here I am, awash in sirens and explosions and music and cigars and food. Heaven.
May G-d protect all who believe in Him, even idiots like me.
Shabbat Shalom.

August 19, 2014: Israel

[It is 10pm as I write this, and if I weren't Old Baldy the hair on my head would be standing in anticipation of the missiles to come. Of course HamAss will deny responsibility, and credit for the assault will be claimed by four organizations: Paleolithic Platypussies for Palestine, Ponderous Pachyderms for Palestine, Rectal Reptiles for Ramallah and Gay Godzillian Geeks for Gaza. And we will pretend it is just a drizzle to be ignored. We won't even ask them to wobble it a bit.
Well after midnight. Zilch. Zip. Nada. My sources inform me that the four organizations were called to a meeting by Insipid Idiots for Islam who convinced them to hold off for another day or two. Sigh…]

AN  ADMISSION  by Smoke-Still-Coming-Out-of-my-Ears Moshe

In excruciating detail, and fury undiminished by time, I recall how the members of kibbutzim stood at the roadside and mocked us every Friday from noon to three as we drove home to Gush Katif. They chanted "End the Occupation! End Gush Katif!" while holding signs with the same message.

Over the years we became friendly with some of these people. As long as the subject was not politics or ideology they could be quite charming, but let the subject touch on Gush Katif or religious belief and it was as if a curtain had descended between us.

"Our Arab neighbors only want to live in peace with us," they would say, "but you religious fanatics and occupiers make it impossible."
Nothing we could say made the slightest difference. The intensity of their secular belief made our supposed religious fanaticism pale in comparison. Like Climate Change/Global Warming, Save the Whales/Snails/Quails, etc, their once-scientific belief had become Holy Writ, and even though scientifically it was Wholly Spit, was enforced with a frenzy that would have thrilled The Inquisition.

After our expulsion, when their loving neighbors began to pound them with mortars, the kibbutzim made a deal with our government to maintain the fiction that all was quiet. However badly they were hit, however serious the damage, no public report was made and the government saw to it that they were well compensated within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Only when there was human injury – animals didn't count, there being no Bovine Weekly or Chicken News or Donkey Radio – was the media informed.

A subsequent conversation with one of these people, in which I asked if she was now prepared to acknowledge that we were right, drew this response: "NO. NO. NO. If only you had left sooner, our neighbors wouldn't be so angry."

So now, as many abandon their homes and others, dulled with despair, await their inevitable destruction, I find it difficult to shed a tear over their plight. Though I have been know to weep for the animals…

Many Sderot residents had similar attitudes, though they expressed themselves in kindly and non-ideologically-charged terms. They genuinely felt sorry for us, but hoped our expulsion would lead to protracted quiet. Once they began to suffer the barrages we had learned to endure in Gush Katif, Rachel volunteered to aid an organization created to publicize their suffering. Once or twice a week I would drive Rachel to Sderot, and wait outside while she edited their English publications in their office, which was in a residential area. I would park in an open lot nearby, sit on a folding chair and smoke cigars while listening to classical music on a small radio. Occasionally a resident would ask me what I was doing, and I replied "My job is to sit here and guide incoming missiles." They would stare, then smile, realizing what you all know, ie, that I am nuts. When the siren would sound, which it did regularly, they would scurry for shelter while I sat there laughing.

Most residents of Sderot were Sephardic, religious, Ethiopian or Russian immigrants. Not the sort of people that our secular, progressive white leaders particularly cared about. My sympathy for them is as great as my lack of sympathy for the kibbutz members.

Shortly before our expulsion there was an art exhibit in Ashkelon. Rachel participated as her teacher was from Ashkelon. The mayor approached the Gush Katif participants and said "Why are you wasting your time there? Come live in Ashkelon, enjoy the peace, the quiet, the safety." When Rachel and others said the barrages we suffer in Gush Katif will fall on Ashkelon if we are expelled, the mayor gave us a pitying look, then a sneer, then mumbled an obscenity and walked away.

My feelings about Ashkelon are much closer to my feelings about the kibbutzim than they are to the Sderot unfortunates. Most rockets fall in the southern part of the city, the part whose residents are largely poor or lower middle class Sephardim. Those in the northern part pay lip-service sympathy but are clearly indifferent.

What does it say about me that I derive such perverse pleasure from their suffering? Keep this in mind when you next try and cast me in some heroic mold.

What Cease Fire?

NONE  SO  BLIND…  by One-Eyed Moshe

As I begin this, 3am Monday, 11.8.14, the thud of rockets exploding around us is constant. According to news reports a cease fire is in effect. You choose. Is the media lying? Am I telling the truth?
We have lost. And like all losers who are not forced to parade with a white flag of surrender, we declare that we have won. And those who defeated us – not militarily, but in the all-important area of the world's perception – are using the time-honored practice of urinating on us in celebration of their victory. And we losers pretend it's just a slight drizzle. And when the drizzle continues, like the Englishman in the theatre who was being whizzed upon by someone in the balcony above, we whine "I say, old chap, could you wobble it a bit?"
That is what is happening now with the on-again off-again cease fires, where we accept some of their demands, then some more, then some more, while they accept none of our terms. Indeed, we congratulate ourselves on how tough we are. In the first hours of the latest cease fire our area was brutally rocketed. HamAss claimed it was not responsible. My extensive research has shown the two groups claiming credit for the attacks are Martian Munchkins for Muhammad and Malevolent Marsupials for Muhammad. We pretended nothing serious has happened.  Pathetic losers.

Worse than pathetic losers. On all three local tv stations the leftist media rules the roost. Leftists politicians, leftist Empty Talking Heads, Arab citizens of Israel weeping over the suffering of their Gaza brethren, and the occasional right-winger who is mocked and drowned out by the wailing sufferers. If all these stations were to disappear, we would at least have the much more trustworthy al-Jazeera…
Those of you living abroad have no conception of the degree to which the collaborators with our enemies control discussion here. Tamar's Oshri recently published JIHAD IN PALESTINE. It was reviewed by a group called Puerile Professors for Peace with Palestine [PeePees]. After raving about the brilliant scholarship, the accuracy of the translations from Arabic, etc, the PeePees conclude that the book cannot be recommended. The author sees no prospect of peace with our neighbors in the foreseeable future, they declare, choosing a view of Israel as Sparta, while we PeePees view Israel as democratic, peace-lovingAthens. [I trust you are not among those who believe the nonsense that Athens was peace-loving and democratic. Athens had much in common with Socialist Israel: If you share our views, you are peace-loving and entitled to the protection of democracy; if you oppose our views you are, by definition, racist/fascist/religious and not entitled to the protection of democracy.]    This Sparta/Athens theme is a media constant, especially among those who argue that B. Hussein Obama is the best friend we have ever had and has pledged to protect us, so there is no need to maintain a strong military. Pathetic losers.

A very fine and intelligent gentleman who works tirelessly to protect Israel's reputation, and whom I admire enormously, chastised me for inappropriate humor in these serious times. He suggested I aid him in his work, and when I failed to respond he said I was just kicking the can down the road which, if I understand properly, means shirking my duty.
He is probably right. But my can is very rusty, already half crushed, and nearly empty. And there is no road that I can see. Before us lies only disaster. Whether it is two days, or two weeks, or two months, or two years, doom awaits. Talk to people here. No sense of relief that the shooting may stop. Only a sense of despair that our fortitude in the face of endless rocket fire will be rewarded by a pause in which HamAss prepares the final blow.
Forgive me for repeating myself, but I pray with every fibre of my being that my despair is not the result of clarity of vision, but of the blindness of bitterness and worry over my children and grandchildren. We know He is All Merciful. May our generation witness that mercy.

[The fun never stops: You may recall we were burglarized and our car stolen about six months ago. We were robbed again over Shabbat. I was up at 4:30am, arguing with the Lord, then morning prayers in the house, then Cheerios and back to bed by 6. When Rachel awoke at 7:30 she saw the door to the garden wide open, plus some furniture re-arranged. What was taken was her jewelry, watch, earrings. We are both in shock. What is fascinating about her misery is that it is less for the jewelry than for the simple small ceramic bowl in which the jewelry was kept. Rachel had purchased it during a trip to Romania, in the Transylvanian town where her parents had lived. I now recall that when our car was stolen, I was more upset about the loss of compact discs than about the car.
The police have been here several times today, and we were told we were part of a spate of Shabbat thefts that included cars, tvs, computers, etc. So I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky, though my heart breaks for Rachel. With every cent allocated to the new house, replacing the stolen items is quite problematic. But we have been through worse.]

Letters From Israel

Subject: OUR OWN WORST ENEMIES 3

Yes, I am aware I haven't sent OOWE 2. No, this is not because I am digitally challenged and cannot count, though I do have a history of problems with math. What it is, is that OOWE 2 deals with this year being the fortieth anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. Every year at this time I go crazy [how can you tell, Moshe?] or crazier than I abnormally am.

I grew up on VICTORY AT SEA and endless documentaries on WW2, and always thought of that as my war. But the YKW became truly mine. What I learned before, during and since has poisoned me forever. And this is totally apart from it having given me the opportunity to learn to swim in Cripple Creek. The great Fang Dynasty philosopher Sakitumi wrote: "When your prose flows like it's coming out of your nose, shut up." For the sake of historical accuracy, there is another translation: "When you shout and spout like its coming out of your snout, shut up." So I will shut up.

[Some of you thought it unfair of me to include Labor party leader Herzog in the OOWE Hall of Shame. Several days ago the well-spoken rectal cavity met with Mr. Abbas, now in the 7th year of his 4yr term as leader of the Palestinian Authority. Mr. Herzog declared that all Jews must be removed from Judea and Samaria, Jerusalem must be re-divided and made the PA capitol, and the United States must be trusted to guarantee Israel's safety. I rest my case.]

DON'T  BE  A  SUCKER by Moshe Saperstein

Most Israeli Jews will tell you that they revere the Ten Commandments. Some actually do, though even among these certain commandments are treated with greater relevance than others.

There is one commandment, not among the Top Ten, a commandment with a corollary that is passionately observed by most Israelis. "Don't be a sucker" is best translated as Get Away With Whatever You Can, the corollary being If You Get Caught, Blame Somebody Else. This results in a lack of courtesy, a lack of elementary decency, that astounds even naturally churlish New Yorkers like myself. Some examples?

I'm at our local clinic patiently waiting my turn to see our doctor. My turn arrives and I enter the office. We exchange the usual pleasantries. The door bursts open. "Just one question" a gentleman yells, "just one question." I look at the floor. One question, which is answered, which leads to another question, etc, until my doctor says "Please wait outside, Moshe. I have to examine him." When my turn does come, my doctor – a local who is married to an American – says "Sorry. You're just not trained for this."

Another example. I am at a large supermarket in an Ashkelon mall. There are ten checkout counters. I am at the counter marked '10 items or less'; it is also marked 'Cripples to the front'. In all my years shopping there I have never been ushered to the front, nor do I push my way forward. I wait my turn patiently. My turn comes. I'm unloading the shopping basket. "Please" says the guy behind me, "I just have two items. Please let me ahead of you."
"Sure" I say, but my heart is sinking. I know that no good deed goes unpunished.
He puts two large bottles on the counter. They are marked Lizard's Testicles Tequila. The clerk, a Russian lady I've known for years, says "These are on special. Three for two. Run back and get another bottle."
Off he goes. And doesn't come back. Three minutes go by. Five. The slow lanes on either side are positively flying. We are still.
"What if he was run over by a shopping cart?" I ask the clerk. "Do we have to wait till he recovers?"
"Shame on you, Moshe. That's not nice," says the clerk.
Ten minutes have gone by.
"What if he died? Do we have to wait till he is buried?"
She is about to lecture me on being nice, when the gentleman returns. He is holding six full plastic bags. "I saw some other things I needed". He puts them on the counter and gives me a smirk best translated as "Up yours, stupid."
But it ended well, sort of.
"Now you have more than ten items," said the clerk. "You have to go to another line."

Rachel goes to a hairdresser, an old friend. She patiently waits her turn. Repeatedly, just as she is seated, a woman bursts in and says "You have to let me go first. It's an emergency. I'm late for a medical procedure." The procedures have included breast enlargement, a tummy tuck, a reshaping of the rectum. What she really needs is a brain transplant. Rachel moves aside. The hairdresser, who should intervene, never does. "You're just too nice, Rachel."

My favorite occurred several years ago. I was driving north on the Ayalon Freeway that passes through Tel Aviv. It was February, and already dark though early in the evening. The Freeway was having repairs done, so the usual four lanes going north were compressed to one. Bumper to bumper, barely crawling forward, everyone in a foul mood. About eight car lengths ahead of me I saw a car trying to pull in from a side road. He was blowing his horn, blinking his lights, waving like a madman. Everyone ignored him. As I pulled up I signaled him to enter. He waved, seemed to be in tears, and much to my embarrassment was blowing me kisses.
Half an hour later the highway had now widened to two lanes. I was in the left lane, and had to turn right to exit. No one would let me in. I found myself alongside the fellow I had allowed in. I tried to get his attention. He ignored me. Finally, my window rolled down, I yelled "Didn't I let you in?"
He stared at me, a look of genuine incredulity. "Just because you were a sucker, do I have to be a sucker too?"

So there it is. Expect nothing. You'll never be disappointed.

SEWER  PIPE  !   by Rachel Saperstein, Neve Dekalim/Nitzan

The Sewer Pipe cum shelter is now the center of our lives. The pipes were brought here after the Cast Lead War began almost four years ago. Rockets were exploding over our heads. With no type of shelter to protect us in our flimsy caravillas, the government imaginatively came up with concrete sewer pipes as the answer to our problem. The pipes cannot protect us from a direct hit, only from shrapnel. Now, when the Iron Dome missiles shoot down a rocket, shrapnel from the two projectiles rain down on us. A friend just found pieces of a Grad rocket, brought down by Iron Dome, in his front yard.

The original sewer pipes, a monotonous grey, were decorated with splashes of color. Often a message of hope and a prayer to the Almighty were added to the paintings. Over time, wind and rain have faded the colors.

Short benches were added to make the pipes more comfortable. They are regularly used by teenagers. Coffee cups, Coke bottles, ice cream wrappers and sticks are everywhere. I often bring broom and shovel to clean the pipe. On one occasion municipal workers weeding a deserted lot piled the prickly weeds at the entrances to the sewer pipe. Complaints to the municipality yielded no results. So I called the police. Having asked the policeman for his name, and adding a bit of flirtatious charm to my request, the debris was soon removed. A neighbor and I swept up the bits and pieces left behind.

Two large tombstone-like concrete formations guard the openings to the sewer pipe. In one of the areas each opening was designated for men or women. A painting of 770 Eastern Parkway adorns the pipe.

With fifteen seconds to run to the pipe one must move quickly. Our caravilla front door is left ajar all day. Possible hindrances are checked and removed. Wet leaves, overgrown hedges, plastic bags, cigarette boxes and candy wrappers blown in by the wind are carefully removed each day.

The siren sounds. We meet in the pipe. There are not enough seats to go around so some of us stand. We always force a smile as the horrific sounds of rockets exploding nearby makes us tremble. "That was close!" brings more of a grimace than a smile. As does "That was loud!" Younger children sit tearfully on adults laps. Older children make a game of running up the cylindrical wars. We wait a few minutes after the sirens have ceased and the explosives have fallen. Then we return to our caravillas to cook, clean and listen to endless broadcasts on tv and radio. Programs are interrupted by announcements as to where the next rockets are headed, giving us a precious few extra seconds.

The sounds of war, the endless sirens and explosions, dictate our lives. This must stop. We pray to the Almighty to give our government the courage to finish this war properly.

MOBILE SHELTERS by Rachel Saperstein, Nitzan/Neve Dekalim

"Do you know the fellow who works in the pizza shop?" a friend asked.
"Of course" I answered.
"Well" my friend continued, "he's ordering a mobile security room. It's costing them quite a bit of money but they have no choice. It's impossible to run with five small children, especially in the middle of the night, into the sewer pipe shelter. He says his kids are terrified. They're wetting their beds, clinging to him and his wife, and afraid to go to sleep at night. 'What will happen if you can't get all of us into the pipe on time?' his oldest kid asked."

We only have ten seconds from the sound of the siren to get into the concrete sewer pipe in our cul de sac. Hence the mobile shelters. Last week, with the sirens wailing, I watched grandparents running into the sewer pipe clutching their grandchildren wrapped in blankets. An infant was held by her pregnant mom.

"Where are they going to put the security room?" I asked my friend.
"They'll cut out parts of the plasterboard wall in the children's room and attach the shelter to it. If there's a night of heavy bombardment they'll put mattresses on the floor and the kids will go to sleep directly from the bath."

Bath time is always frightening. One always wonders if the siren will wail while one is all soaped up. "At least I'll die clean" my husband says.

Last Sunday morning we had the first real experience of the Iron Dome anti-missile defense system. The sound was horrific. Pieces of shrapnel from the exploded missile fell close to a nearby housing area. Is Iron Dome a blessing or a curse? Over fifty missiles have been fired at our western Negev area. Only two or three were intercepted by Iron Dome.

A mother came in to the Community Center as I was talking to the director. "My daughter is afraid to go outside after school. Could you recommend an after-school activity for her? She really trembles from fright."
"How about tae kwan do? The children learn self defense and it's twice a week" the director said. "The children feel empowered. It just might work."

The mother said she would think it over. She was embarrassed to admit the activity was too expensive for her.
It is at moments like this that Operation Dignity steps in to help. But because of our severe shortage of funds I had to remain silent. Perhaps with your help I'll be able to get back to this mother.

Please help Operation Dignity to help people, our people, Gush Katif people, to weather the storm.

ANOTHER ROUND OF WAR by Rachel Saperstein, Neve Dekalim/Nitzan

Over forty rockets have fallen in the south this past weekend. The shooting began Wednesday and intensified on Friday night, a favorite time for Arabs as they know it will destroy our Shabbat rest. The sirens wailed and the loudest, closest explosions were heard at 11:20pm. Our sleep was over.

Late Shabbat afternoon the children of Nitzan began their annual month-long organization festival for the Bnei Akiva youth movement. They marched through the neighborhood banging plastic bottles while singing Israeli folk songs. The sirens sounded. Joyous voices turned into shrieks as the youngsters ran into the sewervilla safety zone near our home. There was no room left for me or the neighbors. The children, at least, were protected.

After Shabbat the television was filled with the scenes of devastation across the entire southern region of Israel. Houses and cars were burning in Ashdod, homes were shattered in Ashkelon. The new Grad missiles are packed with explosives. Their range and destructive power is frightening. Israel is warned not to retaliate, lest the fighting escalate.

Sunday morning, 6am, no siren accompanies the deafening explosion nearby. I jump out of bed and run to the front door. Do I head for the sewer pipe? Are there more missiles falling close by? I'm shaking. I turn on the radio. No mention of our explosion. An hour later we learn the 'iron dome' defense system had hit an incoming missile directly over us.

Two of our grandchildren had planned on spending next Shabbat with us. We were looking forward to the visit. When we spoke to their parents, our children, we agreed to delay the visit until the fighting "calmed down".

Unlike the children in large towns and cities who stay at home as schools are closed, the children of Nitzan have returned to school. No mayor will take the responsibility of opening schools as long as missiles are flying. One hit on a classroom…

I take a walk with Moshe this morning. I need some sunlight. We have been cooped up long enough. The sight of refuse, weeds, discarded furniture and deserted caravillas turns my stomach. Families have moved up the hill to Nitzan B into their new homes. We who are left behind feel frustration, desolation. Some, like us, are in waiting mode. Some will never build.

Moshe returned from morning prayers, greatly agitated. "I watched a missile flying over Nitzan minutes ago. It seemed to burn out just overhead." There had been no siren. After all, there is a cease fire brokered by Egypt between Israel and Hamas. It was later announced the missile was fired by us. Moshe's reaction: "Their [expletive deleted] missile. Our [expletive deleted] missile. Who cares…"

OPERATION DIGNITY is in dire need of financial aid. Our people are once again living under missile fire. We are asking – no, begging – our friends to help us get our people through these terrible times. I can't just walk away when requests for help pour in. Help us help the people you love.

Goodbye 42

GOODBYE 42

[One of my daughters living in a settlement north of Jerusalem called yesterday morning. She was weeping and only with difficulty was able to make me understand what had happened.

When the judenrat announced the “ten-month temporary settlement building ban” it stipulated that the ban, which goes into effect December 1st (yesterday) does not apply to dwellings whose foundation has been completed. A neighbor, who had struggled for years to get the myriad requisite building permits – army, police, local council, Housing Ministry, to name just a few – began working on the foundation Saturday night. At great expense crews worked round the clock, finishing in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The neighbor, relieved but exhausted, was ready for an extended sleep.

At 8am two Housing Ministry inspectors appeared, accompanied by soldiers and police. After a show of examining the foundation, they made a triumphant announcement: Because parts of the foundation were still damp it could not be considered complete. All permits were revoked, and if any further work were done the owner would be arrested and prosecuted for violating a judenrat order.

What horrified my daughter, even more than seeing her neighbor crumple to the ground, was the happy laughter of the soldiers and police.

Media reports focus on demonstrations, violent confrontations, etc. Rarely, as in Gush Katif, are the personal tragedies reported.]

[Some of you have criticized me for “going off the path”, meaning that my belief in the Creator is somehow lacking or incomplete. My connection with the Creator is as unshakeable as that of anyone else. The things I have gone through have raised my connection beyond the level of belief to that of direct knowledge.

Where I have “gone off the path” is that I do not accept that we are in the Beginning of the Redemption as most of my believing fellow Jews are convinced, nor is The End of Days almost upon us as my believing Christian friends aver. People cannot live without hope for a better future, an end to suffering, the triumph of good over evil. Nothing would make me happier than to have my perpetual gloom proven wrong. I am cursed by an inability to convince myself that these believers, whom I revere, are right.

For the Almighty past/present/future are one. Every action and its result is simultaneous. The Eleventh of Maimonides’ Articles of Faith is “I wholly believe that the Lord rewards those who follow His dictates and punishes those who violate them”.

For humans, the shortness of our life span is only matched by the inadequacy of our intelligence. To say the Eleventh Article of Faith, when our limited experience indicates the opposite is true, is a leap of faith I find difficult to make. From His perspective, no problem. From mine…

You all know me for the clown that I am, and with the above I am clearly out of my depth. Moshe as Philosopher is almost as absurd as a Community Organizer as President. So let me just say I believe that the Jews are God’s Guinea Pigs, perpetually subjected to new trials to see how long we can maintain our belief. And if you find the ‘pig’ image offensive, think of us as His Timex watch: “We always take a likkin’ and keep on tikkin’”. And in the end, whenever and whatever that may be, all will be well.]

[Much has been written about the cost of freeing Gilad Schalit. If I, G-d forbid, had a child in captivity I would do just what Noam Schalit has been doing to get his son released.

Those who argue against the deal – though many details are still unknown, we do know that at least 980 terrorists will be released – generally focus on the effect on the families of murdered Israelis seeing the murderers roam free.

I see a more serious problem. Every time Israel trades masses of imprisoned terrorists for the bodies of dead soldiers or a few captive soldiers, the result is wholesale slaughter of Israelis. Yes, the terrorists take an oath to be good boys and girls. But that hasn’t prevented them from renewing their activities. Is Gilad’s release worth the certainty of a hundred or a thousand Jewish deaths? There are 179 known deaths from terrorists released since 2000. With all due respect to the Schalit family, the answer is clear.]

[If Rachel’s piece BUILD OR FREEZE has you passing the hat around for the poor Peace Partners thrown out of work because of the building freeze in Judea and Samaria, forget it. Moshe Dann, an exemplar of investigative reporting and analysis, has informed us that the US government is directly involved in financing massive building projects. And Israel’s Tourism Minister, Stas Mezhinski, has bragged that Israel is underwriting development of tourist attractions and recreational facilities. As this outsized rectal cavity puts it, “Palestinians are entitled to a better quality of life.”

Why complain about others when we are our own worst enemies?]

There were massive complaints that Goodbye 41 didn’t mention the cats. So…

GOODBYE 42

CATS ALL, FOLKS

So much has happened – so much seems to have happened – that it is difficult to know where to begin.

Dramatis Personae:

Chaleria, of course. My favorite. Candidate for Homeliest Female. No friends that I have ever seen. Colors, shades of black. Could be poster child for Help Stamp Out Feline Leprosy.

Muffy-the-Slut. After a long absence she is back. Perhaps the economic downturn caused her to be [if you’ll pardon the expression] laid-off from her job at the cathouse. She is now wizened, smaller than any of her children and grandchildren, yet she retains a regal snarl that keeps her offspring at a distance.

The Impregnator. Large, mean-looking, huge thick tail. Rachel thinks he is the original Paramour. I am convinced he is the product of Muffy’s first litter. Lawns around here are filled with his offspring. The very sight of him gives me apoplexy. Probably because I am jealous.

Shitsi, daughter of Muffy, also known as Shitsi The Whining Terror. I think I’ve already written about how we opened our door early one morning to see Shitsi smirking at us, five furballs at her feet. Rachel was charmed. I was appalled. Another five to feed. Three were red like their mother. Two were brown.

Three days later they were gone, and Shitsi whined non-stop. Rachel was near tears. I could scarcely hide my delight, though it was tempered by guilt over the grieving mother.

Two days passed, and suddenly they reappeared. In the weeks that followed they developed rapidly. Two disappeared again – gone to Catmandu? – leaving two reds, Slummy and Crummy, and one brown, Dummy. The sole pleasure I get is watching them sleep curled into each other.

This leaves three of Muffy’s from an earlier litter. Two are so nondescript I haven’t named them. The third is One-Eyed Jacqueline, for whom I feel a smidgen of sympathy as a fellow disabled creature.

These ten are the regulars. Others appear and disappear.

Poop. Sorry. You know that just as you may be a member of the bourgeoisie I am a member of the poopeoisie.

We long suffered from dog poop on the lawn, until a solution was found. Lots of bottles of water. The bottles act as a funhouse mirror, both reflecting and enlarging the image. Dogs, being stupid, think another larger animal is staring back at them. From the day the bottles were put out there has been no dog poop. An added benefit is that the bottles are a curiosity and visitors invariably ask about them. And I invariably reply that they are part of a satanic ritual that I am forbidden to discuss.

Suddenly piles of poop appeared. Very small piles, doubtless made by a very small dog. I did everything short of closed circuit television to catch the poop perp in the act. Til I saw with my very own peepers that the poopers are my cats. The ground is hard, they go through the motions of digging a hole, poop, then go through the motions of covering it up. But not to worry. Slugs cover the poop with thick, shiny layers of slime. There are times when the slime, covering large swaths of lawn, catches the sun and glows like a giant conflagration. Very impressive. Too bad I can’t enjoy it.

Equally annoying, and more costly, when the pooping pussies can’t be bothered scratching the lawn they climb on the planters and tear up the soft earth. Flower plants are destroyed and have to be replaced.

Cost. One 3 kilogram bag of cat food, costing the shekel equivalent of $13, used to last a month. One 3 kilogram bag of cat food now barely lasts a week. No problem for me. I would just give the meowing moochers less. But Rachel, aka Lady Bountiful, insists they be fed to bursting. True, they don’t kvetch while eating, but the moment they are done…

Rachel is inherently more sympathetic to them than me. But there was one instance which left her screaming “Kill them already!” which I take perverse pleasure in relating. We put up our Succah in the spot that is the cats’ regular hangout. Naturally they were all over tables and chairs, dirtying tablecloths, destroying place settings, etc.

She would yell “get out of my succah” and they would snarl back “you get out of our playground”. [Did you know that I understand ketzelsprach?] We could keep them out when we were physically present, but we couldn’t be there 24/7. And when food was on the table even our physical presence didn’t hold them back. A very stressful succot.

Turkey Neck Bones. Someone – not the Holy Man who used to hurl bread at our lawn – has been putting turkey neck bones outside our door. I have my suspicions, but no proof as yet. And as the person I suspect is a true ditz, I have to carefully work out a plan for getting her to cease and desist.

Falling. My balance, at best, is shaky. [Yes, you have always known I’m unbalanced.] The playful pussies are in the habit of darting before and aft when I walk, and even darting between my legs. Even when I swing at them with a stick, they think I’m being playful. When I forget myself, and give in to the impulse to kick them through the goalposts of my mind, I fall. So far, just scrapes and bruises. Can broken bones be far behind?

Embarrassments.

You know that I have long been looking for a solution – not the Final Solution – to the cat problem. We feel we are under siege, and helpless.

I asked a friend working in our garden if there was something I could put in their water to put them to sleep. No sooner were the words out of my mouth when I realized ‘put them to sleep’ is a euphemism for killing them. Before I could explain that I literally wanted them to sleep so I could put them in a bag and dump them far away, my friend gave me an embarrassed look and asked “are you and Rachel having problems?”

I asked my doctor about a sleeping powder for the cats, hastening to explain my purpose. He gave me his serious look: “It’s not unusual for people in pain or under stress to contemplate suicide”, and before I could protest, “You know our Health Plan covers consultations with a psychiatrist”.

[To those who ask my opinion of the campaign against the Freeze: The same people who through cowardice, confusion and collusion with the enemy sabotaged the campaign to save Gush Katif are directing the campaign against the freeze. Can the result be different?]

Goodbye 41

Subject: GOODBYE 41

[A senior moment: I try and avoid leaving the house because of my plumbing problems. Pajama-clad and steps from a lavatory is my favored state. Imagine my consternation – panic would be more accurate – when we learned of a death in Kiryat Arba, in a family to whom we are very close. But Rachel was insistent that we make a condolence call, so off we went.

Though we got there without mishap, as we approached the house the pressure built until I thought I would either explode or delouse my clothes. Entering the apartment Rachel made her way through the crowd while I knocked people aside getting to the bathroom. Emerging at last I put on the somber face appropriate to the setting and made the requisite mumbling sounds as I worked the room.

Each somber mumble was met with a grin, a laugh, a smirk. Very disconcerting. When I finally reached Rachel at the other end of the room she gave me the ‘you pathetic bastard’ look and directed my gaze downward. Not only had I failed to zipper up after relieving myself, but my ritual fringes had emerged for air and were swinging to and fro.

Getting old sucks.]

[You know my penchant for sitting outside large swaths of night, smoking and listening to classical music on the radio. For some reason the programmers have started playing Greatest Hits discs, wholly inappropriate for the music geeks like myself listening at those hours. It’s like having eight aural orgasms in an hour. Don’t they realize that, in music as in most other things, getting there is half the fun?]

[A modest proposal: I have been told that the producers of pork products, alarmed over dwindling sales, are pushing the media to drop the term ‘swine flu’ and limit descriptions to H1N1 only. This will never work as Americans demand something catchy and colorful and descriptive, even on a horrible subject, and H1N1 is simply too technical.

Might I suggest that ‘swine flu’ be renamed ‘JewFlu’. Jews, as we all know too well, are blamed for every problem in the world these days, even for bovine gaseous emissions that supposedly cause Global Warming. [Or is it now Climate Change? I get so confused…]

Most American Jews would love the name, accept the blame, embrace the shame and revel in the opportunity to grovel and beg forgiveness of their fellow citizens.

Perhaps when the present wave of Rabbis Fast for Gaza, Gay Jews for Palestine, Holistic Hebes for Hijabs, Genuflecting Jews for Jihad and Peripatetic Jewish Pussies for Peace have become passé, all can unite in a campaign whose motto is I’m A Jew Who Hates The JewFlu.]

[So many of you were inspired by Rachel’s description of our visit to Lachish for the ground-breaking ceremonies. A few minor details were left out, which I hasten to include so as to rekindle the inspiration.

First, there were a substantial number of speakers representing governmental bodies who had, without exception, worked to sabotage the Lachish project. Now they expressed satisfaction that the project was going forward, and modestly claimed credit for the progress.

Second, much to my disappointment one scheduled speaker could not attend. He was a local Peace Partner from a village over the Green Line. I have it on good authority he wanted to thank the authorities for repopulating a desolate area with Jews. Local Peace Partners are faring poorly economically. With the return of Jews and their many possessions the locals will be able to feed their families in the time-honored way of ‘liberating’ Jewish property.

Third, not only was a Raptor Sanctuary being created, but even the most esoteric of their needs would be looked after. Knowing that the flying rats would be affected by the new residents raging religiosity, crafts shops would be created for raptor-friendly black yarmulkes and shtreimlach.]

GOODBYE 41

NIGHTMARE ON CHELM STREET

or

ONWARD AND DOWNWARD!

In our first year in Israel I was filled with trepidation at the approach of Rosh Hashana and the Ten Days of Awe culminating in Yom Kippur. I was the same overweight charmer I had been in the States, yet never before had such strong premonitions that I would not be inscribed in the Book of Life for the coming year.

Much of the fear came from a newly discovered sense of mortality. I had completed three months of basic training as the High Holidays approached and that experience had shown me how fragile is my hold on life. Being obese, obtuse and exceedingly clumsy, not to mention my cinema-generated determination to be a hero, repeatedly put me into situations from which I was lucky to escape serious injury or death. Annual reserve duty only reinforced my sense of imminent doom.

[aside: Typical Moshe dramatization or exaggeration, you say, smiling disdainfully? Try this:

One year our reserve duty was devoted to preparing for a division-size exercise that was to last several days. Tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, everything except air power. Most of the ground troops were regular army, and our aging reservists seemed to be there for window dressing.

My unit’s task was to charge up a hill and ‘capture’ enemy-held bunkers at the top. To make the exercise as realistic as possible live fire was mandated. No running around pointing a weapon and yelling ‘fire’. Given the real danger that we might accidentally shoot each other, every precaution was taken, such as insuring we didn’t cross each others paths during the ascent.

So far, so good. But I was trained as a rifleman, and picked up some competence as a machine gunner, and I was given an Uzi. I hate the Uzi. The short barrel makes it a midget rifle, or a pistol with elephantiasis. A mammoth like me needs a big gun. Still, orders are orders and I charged up the hill.

I hadn’t gotten thirty or forty feet when I stumbled on a rock and involuntarily pressed the trigger. Naturally, this being a live fire exercise, the safety was off.

Two bullets were fired. They passed between the inside of the helmet and my scalp, exiting through the helmet. Those of you who know me for my swelled head will find it impossible to believe there was room enough for the bullets to pass through without blowing my cranium off. I am at a loss for a logical explanation, other than that the Lord was warming me up for future adventures.

Too stupid to be frightened, I just stood there bemusedly staring at the holes in my helmet. Two trickles of blood meandered down my left cheek, losing themselves in my beard. My CO ran up to me. He was gasping for breath, his face a panorama of apoplectic anger and concern. He really was a good guy, and I know his concern outweighed anything else.

“I’ll have to report this” he said, still breathing hard. “You’ll be court-martialed, and maybe you’ll… Maybe they’ll let you go with a reprimand because you’re a new immigrant.” Then, after a long pause, “Don’t you have anything to say?”

“I told you I didn’t want the damned Uzi.”

As it was, there was no court-martial and no notoriety. While I was giving myself a shave and haircut an artillery unit that was supposed to fire on Hill X inadvertently fired on Hill Y, killing three observers and wounding eight others. This happy event caused so much noise that my contretemps was forgotten.]

The purpose of the above was to explain why I was filled with dread as the High Holidays approached. But despite the dread the thought of all those hours in shul had me in a panic. I see we are at the edge of the abyss yet those around me are blissfully unaware of what’s coming. It’s all smiles and “Thank G-d things are improving every day.” But they aren’t improving, and I seem to occupy a different world than those around me.

When a good friend, someone I respect and admire, said “Now I understand why we had to leave Gush Katif. We have to teach the rest of Israel how to live as joyously as we lived there!”, I completely lost it.

“Don’t you see what’s ahead?” I shouted. Every day, in the weeks before the expulsion, he and I had hugged each other after morning prayers and said “He won’t let it happen.” Now he smiled: “He won’t let it happen.”

I turned away and said under my breath “I can’t be with these people anymore.”

Be careful what you wish for, the saying goes. Your wish might just come true. If no other human heard me whisper, He certainly did.

Okay, smart guy, I imagine Him saying, let’s see how you enjoy a shul-free holiday season. Within days I was coughing, feverish, and diagnosed as having flu. Further tests confirmed it was H1N1.

I was flabbergasted. “I’ve been an orthodox Jew all my life” I said to a (now former) friend. “I’ve never so much as sniffed pork.”

“Have you looked in a mirror?” he replied. “You eat like a pig. You look like a pig. So why shouldn’t you get pig flu?”

The long and the short of it is that I spent most of the holidays at home, and even now am largely homebound. Even after I was officially over the flu, my plumbing was messed up beyond imagining. The worst was Yom Kippur. I’ve always fasted, and though two doctors and a rabbi told me I was required to drink, I knew better. It went reasonably well until 2am when I awoke with the need to empty my bladder. But instead of what usually comes out there was dried blood and a few drops of the wet variety. And the pain was excruciating.

Panic stricken, I started to drink but the damage was done. Every five or six minutes the need recurred and each time it was wet and dry blood. And pain. I could taste blood in my mouth from biting my lips to keep from screaming.

I didn’t want to wake Rachel who had fallen asleep about 1am, totally exhausted from caring for me and running the household. This was not gallantry on my part. I knew that if I woke her she would insist on calling an ambulance to take us to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon. Where we would sit for hours surrounded by drunken Russians and elderly heart attack victims, to finally be seen by Peace Partner doctors and nurses covering for the regular Jewish staff. Not for me.

Three hours, three hellish hours, and I finally was able to sleep. An unforgettable Yom Kippur, and one I completely deserved.

Several of you keep sending me texts and videos of Netanyahu’s appearances. Why? Nobody denies that he is an excellent speaker. As is Obama. One major difference is that Obama has beliefs while the invertebrate Netanyahu has none. Obama’s beliefs – a One World Socialist New Order – are repugnant to me. They are leading to the imminent dissolution of Israel, and the eventual disintegration of the United States. Netanyahu, on the other hand, knows what is right and invariably does what is wrong. His sole concern is his own survival.

Immediately after the closed ninety-minute meeting between Obama and Netanyahu I was inundated with requests for my take on what went on. Not that anyone thought I actually knew what had transpired, but because “Moshe, you’re always good for a tasteless joke”.

As I told a visiting AFSI group – they are among the shrinking circle of people I adore, and with whom I feel utterly comfortable – “Obama said Israel was to be castrated, but the ever-persuasive Netanyahu convinced him that we first be anaesthetized.”

Surely about as tasteless a joke as I could manage, and more accurate than I imagined.

Many sensed something was amiss given the secretive nature of the meeting, and all my tendrils began vibrating in panic when Leftist Labor party ideologue Daniel Ben-Simone said “We must not attack Netanyahu. When the extent of his concessions to Obama become known the Right will abandon him and we will have to rescue him”.

Then everything seemed to change. There was the brouhaha over Gilo. People went wild over Netanyahu, Defender of the Faith, Defender of Jerusalem. I begged those who had gone from distrustful to starry-eyed to realize that Gilo was considered even by the Left as part of Jerusalem, and the emphasis on Jerusalem meant the abandonment of Judea and Samaria. To no avail. Gilo was Netanyahu’s kashrut certificate.

Basking in his new-found upright stature, Netanyahu quickly reverted to form and announced the “ten month freeze on all settlement building”. His sycophants on the Right reacted with shock. Even the estimable Caroline Glick in the Jerusalem Post [Friday, November 27] wrote a scathing column, “Bibi’s Bad Week”. Long a supporter and apologist for Netanyahu, Glick now sees him as a person with size 2 feet trying to fill size 9 shoes, or a minnow surrounded by sharks.

My own view is much less sympathetic. I believe Netanyahu is complicit in everything that has happened. I believe the Gilo affair was created to establish his bona fides and deflect criticism from the settlement freeze to come.

Whether Glick is correct and Netanyahu is merely pitiable, or I am correct and Netanyahu is contemptible, the result is the same: Doom and gloom for us.

On that happy note…
